The warmth of the spring breeze was almost hedonistically good after the harsh winter, and she found herself taking a strange enjoyment in the scents of the awakening earth. The richness of fresh-turned earth, the damp brightness of the air after a rain shower, the lingering scents of new blooms....

Stop it, she told herself sternly. This is no time to become maudlin. Success is in your grasp; will you let it slip away because you were staring out the window mooning over nature like an idiot Hufflepuff?

She turned to face the room again, looking into the eyes of her husband. "All is in readiness for the attack?" she asked.

He nodded slowly. "It is. We have only to finish the creation of our Portkeys. All of our people are trained, and their robes marked so they will not be confused with our enemies. Soon we will be the foremost Dark power in the land."

"And you shall be the new Dark Lord," she said, coming to sit next to him and running a hand over his coarse, grey hair with an unaccustomed tenderness. "As you were ever meant to be."

He took hold of her hand and pressed a small kiss to her palm. "With you as my Dark Lady," he said, smiling, "how can I do anything but succeed?"

He could not, of course, so she did not answer. Instead she allowed him to draw her head to his shoulder, and they sat together, each contemplating their plans for the 8th April, each certain that they could not be defeated. Their enemy had not enough men, not enough power, and no warning whatsoever. Their success was assured.

And the Dark Lord--and Lady--shall rise again.
