Fic: I'm Not From Around Here

Title: I'm Not From Around Here
Author: [livejournal.com profile] aibhinn
Rating: G
Pairing: Ten/Jack/Rose
Summary: "I'm just not sure that stand-up comedy is really for you, y'know?"
Disclaimer: Not mine. Not making any money. Please not to sue me.
Author's Notes: Oh, God. The bunny bit HARD after watching the first disc of season 1 of The Muppet Show. Yes, Fozzie Bear inspired a Doctor Who ficlet. Run. Run now.

"Why is it that nobody ever believes I can be funny?" the Doctor complained plaintively as he, Jack, and Rose left the nightclub they'd visited on Artus IV. It had been open mike night, and while Jack's handsome face and bright smile had gained him his fifteen minutes in the spotlight (and his voice had earned him a standing ovation), the emcee had refused to allow the Doctor onstage at all.

"Because you're the Oncoming Storm and everyone senses it?" Jack asked saucily.

"Because you're trying too hard," Rose said more seriously. "You went up there practically begging for a go. That makes people think that maybe you're not all that good after all, if you have to beg."

"Hm." The Doctor cocked his head to the side, looking at her. "You believe I can be funny, though, don't you?"

"Of course!" she said, mostly honestly. "I mean, you make me laugh all the time. I'm just not sure that stand-up comedy is really for you, y'know?"

"Not for me?" he repeated, wounded. "Really? Do you think so? Because I think I'd be great at it, myself."

"I dunno, Doc. Maybe so, but I don't think that was a very receptive crowd for humour anyway." Jack shaded his eyes and looked up at the sky, where a large, bright disk glowed. "Wow, that's something. Is that the sun or the moon?"

"How should I know?" the Doctor deadpanned. "I'm not from around here."

Jack winced. Rose rolled her eyes. The silence was eloquent.

"What?" the Doctor demanded. "Oh, come on, that was funny! That's a brilliant joke! Been around for ages, that one!"

"We know," Jack and Rose said simultaneously.

The Doctor huffed. "All right, then, have it your way," he said petulantly. "I'll just have to come up with some better material. A few days in the library should do the trick…."

He strode off towards the TARDIS, talking to himself under his breath. Rose met Jack's eyes and the two of them chuckled ruefully. "It'll keep him out of trouble for a while," Rose offered.

"Until he tries his act on the wrong world and we end up running for our lives again," Jack added, shaking his head. He held out his hand to Rose. "Come on, let's go before he forgets us."

The two of them turned to follow their lover towards the TARDIS.

I dunno, I'm with everyone: as much as I love him, I just don't see the Doctor making a good living from playing the Comedy Club.

Fun fic (-:

Yes, I will say it again, once more, just to make sure you heard it the first time, and no I won't go away, and I'm more stubborn than you, but let me rephrase the comment I relayed to you earlier, just in case you forgot.

MORE!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, thanks for listening, looking, reading, seeing, observing, contemplating, mulling, understanding, comprehending, thinking, deliberating, and in case you are still not quite sure.....

more please?

Very true, he can be funny at times - but stand up? No. He'd be a great children's entertainer, though.

You're on drugs. Feel free to stay on drugs, though, the results are amusing :)

I can't think of a faster way for them to end up running for their lives, actually . . . which would be hilarious, but then Rose and Jack would have to deal with Pouty!Doc.

OTOH, *that* could be funny, too! XD

I still want to see him give it a shot.

Loved it! After so many years, I can see The Doctor repeating old jokes. And I love what Jack says at the end about not getting left behind...he's so paranoid...even if it does happen...

Heh. That's brilliant. Esp. Jack's (probably very correct) prediction that the Doctor's urge to be a comic performer will get them savaged by the natives.

Did I mention how much I love your Doctor, hes so in character and yet in such a different light to which we see him on the show. I want more writing from you.

Is it bad that I laughed at the "I'm not from around here" comment? *snickers* Personally, he's hilarious in his own way. I don't think stand up is for him though. Thanks for the laughs and the great read!

This made me grin! The Doctor and stand-up comedy would make such an intriguing and mostly wacky couple, ha.

This was cute and anytime the Muppett show can inspire fanfic, god is his heaven and all's right with the world.

Strangely enough I over-looked the header and was invisioning Nine in the nightclub scene from Empty Child as his attempt at public humor.

Anyway, tee hee hee.
